Long-lost painting of Adetutu “Tutu” Ademiluyi sets the art world alight

In 1973, Nigerian artist Ben Enwonwu painted Adetutu “Tutu” Ademiluyi but in around 1975, the painting – one of three of the paintings of the princess – went missing. In 2017, it turned up in a London flat, where it was auctioned at Bonhams auction house. The painting, described as “rare and remarkable” by Bonhams, sold for £1.2m, exceeding estimates and setting a record for the artist.

The painting, a Nigerian national icon and considered a reconciliation symbol between the government and Biafran separatists after the civil war.
